I had no real interest in the Bible, in fact my interests were more in Buddhism. But through a strange set of circumstances I came into contact with a number of Christians. One of them invited me to Long Story Short. By nature I’m a very shy person so the thought of going to a big group was a bit daunting. Fortunately the group I went to was small and we all jelled quickly. We met once a week at a friend’s house for coffee and dessert. Long Story Short was very informative and was a great help when it came to understanding the story of the Bible.
A friend of mine invited me to Long Story Short. I’m a cynic by nature, so a good debate about the Bible sounded interesting. At first I was a bit disarmed because I expected this thing (the video) to come straight at me. But it didn’t and I have to admit that after a few weeks I got drawn into the story-line. We still had some great discussion and sometimes we spent hours after the group firing questions around. It was a very good time and I made some very good friends. I’m still a bit undecided on the belief side of things. But I guess I’ve moved a bit from a cynic to an investigator.
I was walking through the Wellington race course and I saw a sign with “Kings Arms” written on it. It sounded like a pub, so I thought I should check it out. But what do you know, it was actually a church. My curiosity was up by then so I asked what they were all about. I guess I set myself up for that one. Anyway, they invited me to check out Long Story Short. I had been to church a couple of times in the past as a kid at Christmas time, christenings and the likes. So I knew a bit about the Bible. But the Long Story Short series opened up the story of the Bible like I had never seen it before. Truly fascinating. Being a bit of a sceptic, I really enjoyed having time to ask questions and sit around and talk it all over. The whole thing was pretty laid back and casual and I made some good friends. It also started me on a journey of discovery. In fact it was so good I decided to do the series again.
I was brought up as a Jehovah’s Witness. So as soon as I was old enough I did my training and went out on mission. I guess I wasn’t a good missionary because I met a guy who wasn’t a JW and I moved in with him. The church didn’t like that much, so needless to say my mission was over. But then the two of us started searching for some form of meaningful spirituality. A mutual friend invited us to Long Story Short. The thing that became obvious to me was that I knew lots of the stories of the Bible but I didn’t really know what the book was about or what it was trying to say. Long Story Short brought all the pieces together so that it made sense. In the past there had been lots of pressure to do and say the right thing. Long Story Short was just so very different with no pressure, no guilt and no manipulation. It was just a very pleasant relaxed journey that has had a real effect on me for the better.
